Anyone who emphasizes the necessity of teacher preparation through faculties of education, anticipates the future roles of these faculties, and seeks to develop their preparation systems should examine the history of the establishment and development of this faculty in Egypt, leading up to its present state. In 1929, the Higher Institute of Education for Teachers was established with the aim of preparing teachers for general education schools. The institute was also intended to serve as a center for scientific research in educational and psychological studies related to children and as a means of disseminating modern educational ideas among educators. In September 1956, a law was enacted to regulate Egyptian universities, followed by a presidential decree in the same month stipulating that the Faculty of Education should become one of the faculties affiliated with Ain Shams University. By the end of 1970, the Faculty of Teachers was merged with the Faculty of Education at Ain Shams University, and following this model, most faculties of education in Egypt were established.
It is worth noting that the establishment of the Faculty of Education—as a specialized institution for teacher preparation—was closely linked to the civilizational progress that Egypt had reached at that time. It was also associated with a cultural openness that had borne fruit in the form of intellectual leaders and an enlightenment movement. Since then, the faculty's mission has been defined as preparing and qualifying students for the teaching profession, whether through the integrated system for general secondary school graduates or the sequential system for university graduates and those of equivalent status. The faculty also undertakes the preparation of specialists and leaders in various educational fields while focusing on conducting scientific research on educational issues, disseminating research findings, as well as renewing educational thought and promoting cultural advancement. Currently, the Faculty of Education comprises 17 departments, covering various fields of education and pedagogy.
